Thank you all! I'm so surprised and essay I wrote on a whim got taken, but one's I worked harder on haven't. I think I was just "on" that day. I love those days, but you have to work really hard and hit your head against the wall on 98% of the other days to get there.

Yes, 98% is about it. Got two grant rejections last week - then one of my doctoral students got a sweet NIH fellowships (I'm the sponsor). It's persistence - exhausting, exhilerating persistence.
