Happy Arbor, er, Prairie Day
Roughly 1% of the tallgrass prairie remains, making it one of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet. While Arbor Day is all good and noble, Prairie Day would potentially help more species of animal, plant, microbe, etc by calling attention to a gargantuan region we eradicated within the last century.
I think that a "Prairie Day" is an excellent idea!
ReplyDeleteMe too! I was seriously working on planting a prairie today. Albeit, a tiny little prairie in my own yard. But hey, it's at least a start AND a step in the right direction. I tried for all natives...not an easy task! Some of what I obtained turned out to be hybrids. Bummer dude! Def a learning curve involved...hmmm. Anyway, out went hastas & daylilies. In went milkweed & goldenrod & countless other cool natives. Can't wait to watch them do their thing. The milkweed I planted last year was truly like crack. I'm thoroughly addicted to natives. Prairie Day is on!
