The unsung heroes of the academic world... We have the same thing on newspapers here in the UK: interns (or workies as they're known on my paper, short for work experience). The idea is you go to university (very often Oxford or Cambridge), you get a first - and then you go and work on a prestigious newspaper for free. It's a great honour...
PG--I'm working on a pony tail. WA--McDonalds has a university you know... Victoria--I've had my share of free internships, but to think of them as jobs vs. community service is mind boggling. Gotta love the humanities.
Hilarious...and having been a graduate student for many years, and now mentoring them, well - here are my thoughts: I've only had one doctoral student with a pony tail. He was my first student. The minute he got a postdoc he cut off his hair (and it was long) and the minute he got hired as an Assistant Professor he grew it back. (Not sure what that says...). As for $600 a year - that sounds right for what I made, but geez, at the medical school I'm in, they're getting paid $24K a year (with reduced tuition and insurance covered) and so are a pricey lot (relatively speaking, I realize). That said, I often find myself looking at their world and missing it - that time to focus on a few things, to - in a sense - work selfishly on those things - without the curse of MEETINGS. You could change that Simpson's cartoon, mention Associate Professors, and that they go around to their MEETINGS, and my response would be:
Pam--I don't know if I'm burned out or simply am 100% disenchanted, but academic life in the institional way feels very uncharming right not. I don't make 24k a year, but I know some folks do, even in the humanities here at UNL, because they get teaching spots PLUS fellowships on top of that. It's not fair, but I'd could go one for pages. I'm thinking of taking some time off to start another book. Or to work at Burger King with my Ph.D.

too funny, lol
Things could be worst. You could have gone to Bovine University and done your grad work at Burger King.
