Each year we see more and more birds and insects as the garden grows. Last night was my first-ever-in-my-life sighting of a bluebird, who inspected the lawn from the red maple, then the fence, then lifted away. Strange how exciting such a moment can be, yet afterward, such a let down. Whoever wrote the lyrics for that song didn't have it right.
My (free) bluebird house is late in arriving, and is surely too late for nesting anyway, but even still, I doubt my suburban lawn would be the large enough, field-like habitat they prefer.
"There's a bluebird on my maple, it's nice, here's my picture, it's even taken with my SLR."

cool, honestly I've never seen a bluebird before. I saw my first tufted titmouse a couple days ago at the feeder, that was special too.
My Bluebirds just arrived and last week and started nesting Benjamin. They were about a month behind last years so maybe....? They are so beautiful.
My neighbor down the road has the coveted open fields, and that is where the bluebirds hang out. I never could entice them to my place, which has some lawn but is mostly woods. I put up a bluebird house without success. Then the next year I painted it blue! I have had bluebirds nesting there every year since. I understand your thrill at seeing a bluebird. I still get excited with every sighting.
I saw them when I lived in Atlanta, as a child. Our house was on a slope, so my room on the second floor was really almost three stories up, with a pine tree just outside it. Whenever I woke before the rest of the family, I'd sit in the window and watch the birds. I'd see cardinals, bluejays, orioles, and rarely, a bluebird. They tended to fly lower. They disappeared for a while because the city got to big, but I hear they're back. I don't think they make it to New Orleans, unfortunately.
The bluebirds have been around here but have not nested yet..birds are behind here as well in nesting so it may happen that they nest in your house..sometimes the bluebirds get to the houses too late and other birds take them...I am hoping the bluebirds get in there soon
How cool! It sure is a pretty creature.
Greggo--What I'd really like to see now is a cedar waxwing. They look so cool.
Lona--Well, hope they are behind this year then!
DG--You painted it blue and then they came? Ha. So, if I want orioles I paint it orange, etc?
Anon--I don't know if they get to New Orleans. Sounds like you had the kind of childhood view out your window I had--awesome, isn't it?
Donna--I hope my house gets here! But then I have to check to make sure sparrows aren't in it. Work work work.
Sue--I'm glad I looked out thewindow when I did! :)
